RaspberryPi

I use my RaspberryPi for two things: either as a media center or as some kind of server/playground.

Media Center

When I use my Raspi as a media center, I recommend to use OpenELEC as OS. It's the most lightweight system for a pure media center, completely free (and open source) and the whole system is only 94 MB in size. Also, there's a very cool plugin for changing the config right from your sofa.

Server/Playground

I think, Raspian (the official Debian version for the Pi) contains a lot of unneccessary crap. That's why I use this Debian System with Hard Float binaries (floating point operations are done in hardware instead of software emulation, that means higher performances).

Configuration

The Raspberry Pi is configured using the file config.txt, which is in the boot folder of the sdcard. I always overclock my system. Here's my config:

core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6

# set to 'force_turbo=1' to disable dynamic overclocking (you can lose your warranty!)
  force_turbo=0

# If you have any data corruption using Turbo Mode and overclocking
# try with this setting uncommented
# If this still fails, try to use Medium mode without "over_voltage=2"
# If it ultimately keeps failing, forget about this until it gets fixed
# Use a more conservative mode that will works fine in any cases:
# initial_turbo=30
